Congregational History
In June of 1923, the Official Board of St.Paul's church discussed the possibility of establishing a third United Brethren Church in
Hagerstown. Shortly thereafter, Mr. and Mrs. Warphy Miller presented the lot on the southeast corner of Summit Avenue and Howard Street
for the purpose of erecting a church to house the proposed congregation. By November, ground was broken and the following June the
cornerstore was laid. Emmanuel's 111 members continued to hold prayer meetings in the private homes of the congreation members until
the permanent church home was complete. In January 1925, the first Sunday school session was held in the nearly completed church with
an attendance of 112. Finally, February 1, 1925, the new Emmanuel United Brethren Chruch was dedicated with Rev. Carl N. Mundis as
the first pastor.
Over the last 85 years, Emmanuel has seen many changes. In 1946, the Evangelical Church and the United Brethren Churches merged. In
1955 and 1968, respectively, the new sanctuary and educational facilities were completed. In December of 1970, the corporate name of the
Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church was changed to the Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
There are two parking lots available for your use. One is located on
the southwest corner of Summit and Howard Streets. The other is
located in the 800 block of Guilford Avenue behind the church. There
is on-street parking as well.
The church is handicapped accessible through the Summit Avenue
entrance.
