“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9, New International Version).
Sue and I have a miniature horse and donkey, 4 small goats, 6 chickens, 2 dogs and 2 cats. Quite the farmers are we! (Not!) Ha-Ha. Actually, we got 4 goats when we bought the property next to us to help keep the weeds and grass to a minimum. The horse, donkey and chickens came later (story for another time). I have to say out of all our “kids” Eeyore (guess who?) is my favorite. I often ponder this steadfast, patient, always on guard animal. I think of what it was like when Jesus chose this quiet animal to carry him on Palm Sunday so long ago. People there were expecting their King and Savior to arrive. A large white stallion would have probably been more appropriate in their thinking. But Jesus was greeted with “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” riding on a lowly donkey.
Jesus came not as a King in the way we think, but as a Savior King. A Lamb of God, Willing to die for our sins. Are we or can we be as steadfast, patient and willing to obey our Lord as the donkey? Hee Haw, Hee Haw!
Dear God, forgive us when we fall short in our lives. Help us to always get up when we are knocked down and know that you are always there for us. Your love will sustain us! Praise be to God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit! Amen.
