Some of you know that I’m a big basketball fan and recently I’ve noticed that many college and professional teams are wearing a variety of warm-up jerseys over their game uniforms. It’s a new twist on an age-old effort to instill a sense of pride, togetherness and connection and to motivate the players.
Lately I’ve seen warm-up shirts with slogans like “Never Give Up”, “All In”, “Together We Win”, “Expect Greatness”, “Outwork Them”, “Us Together” and others.
We even see similar quotes of a religious nature from time to time to show our beliefs: “Jesus Saves”, “John 3:16”, God Is My Co-Pilot”, “He Is Risen” and more. These too are designed to remind us (and others) of who we are and what we believe in.
These reminders can be found anywhere in life, from a basketball court to the inside of a church. They all serve to bring us together and unite us in our faith.
Finally, (and I didn’t see this on a t-shirt) there’s a great quote from the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan: “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that’s why I’ve succeeded.”
If we simply substitute the word “sinned” for “failed” and add “through Jesus Christ” to the end of the sentence we, as Christians, have a slogan worth printing on a t-shirt or in our hearts.
“I’ve sinned over and over and over again in my life and that’s why through Jesus Christ I’ve succeeded.”
